How is the age difference calculated?

The earlier birth date belongs to the older person. The calculator counts forward from that date to the later birth date.

The difference is the exact age of the older person on the birth date of the younger person. The rule is the same as in the exact-age calculator.

First, the calculator counts completed years. Then it counts up to 11 completed months from the last anniversary. Then it counts the remaining days.

Total days count every calendar day between the two dates. Leap days count like other days.

For example, November 23, 1990, and July 19, 1993, differ by 2 years, 7 months, and 26 days. The total is 969 days.

Month ends and February 29

If a month has no date with the same day number, the anniversary uses the last day of that month.

January 31, 2000, and March 1, 2000, differ by 1 month and 1 day. The month anniversary is February 29, 2000. The total is 30 days.

February 28, 1990, and February 29, 1992, differ by 2 years and 1 day. The total is 731 days.

A February 29 birth uses February 28 for anniversaries in common years. February 29, 1992, and February 28, 1993, differ by 1 year.

Calculation limits

Two equal birth dates give zero years, months, and days. Neither person is older.

Use Gregorian dates from 1600 through 9999. The calculator does not use birth times. This tool does not apply legal age rules or dating-age rules.
