Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, so it moves among November 22 through 28. November 27, for example, was Thanksgiving in some of the years studied and a different weekday in others. A fixed-date ranking blends those years together.
Our Thanksgiving birth study follows the actual holiday each year and compares it with nearby Thursdays. That shows a lower count on Thanksgiving in these records. The November ranking by itself cannot tell us why any date has fewer births.
How to read the ranks and counts
The November rank compares 30 dates; the overall rank compares 366. Both measure commonness, with #1 at the high end. Sorting the table from rarest first changes the row order, not the meaning of a rank. A date's birth share uses all recorded births in the dataset as its denominator, including births outside November.
We calculated the results from daily U.S. birth records compiled by FiveThirtyEight: CDC/NCHS for 1994 through 1999 and SSA for 2000 through 2014, without overlapping years. November accounts for 6,884,173 recorded births. These counts describe the historical records, rather than everyone alive now or births worldwide.
